manuel: armed guard. kampala, uganda. 2013

manuel: armed guard.  kampala, uganda.

"and when my mother died, i just could not be there anymore."

manuel earns about 100,000 shillings per month as an armed guard in kampala, uganda. mind you, that's about $39.21... per month. oh, and then they subtract his uniform allowance.

he sends it all home to his lady in tororo, where he lived while taking care of his ailing mother.
and then she died.

so now he guards this apartment complex.

"i wish i had a camera," he says. "i would do so much better than i do with this." and he kind of spits and looks at the terrible rifle that may or may not work...

i hope he never finds out.

"the lowest price place i can find is 50,000. but i do not have. after they take my uniform allowance, i send the rest home to my girlfriend. i want to move her here but i do not have enough."

"so you don't have a place here?"

"no."

"where do you sleep?"

he just shrugs.

"i work at night."
